Tick Tock
When you really want something, you’ll find a way to go get it.
One of more common excuses that i’ve heard is, “I don’t have time.” The truth is, until our clocks actually expire, we do have the time. As we know, we all get 24 hours in a day. Time is there. The real issue is actual prioritization. When we decide that something is not a priority, we most likely won’t give it any attention. When you truly want something, you’ll make the time to go after it. I’m writing about this now because I find this to be relevant to my life. Yesterday, I was supposed to work at 7:30 and there was a basketball game that I had to go shoot. The problem was that the game was supposed to start at 7:30 and I would have to make that commute from work in San Mateo all the way out into the city. I told George that I would keep him posted on whether I could make it to the game or not. So, I texted my work and asked if I could pick up some extra hours.
I got to work about an hour and a half early and they let me leave about 10 minutes early. That 10 minutes actually did make a difference so I got to the game right at the end of the first quarter. What’s the point of me saying all this? I could have easily told George, “Yeah, I can’t make it bro I don’t get off until 7:30.” When you want something, you’ll find a way to go after it. This wasn’t really about shooting this game in particular. With this, i’m thinking bigger picture. Shooting these games may help one of these days with growing my personal brand with Jsquared and with In The Lab as a whole.
Another example of this was a few months ago. I was interning with a start up photography company and I was on my way to get my day started. As I was on my way there, I got a text message with an address saying “Going to be here at 10:30.” I was already on my way to get to my internship, maybe about 15 minutes away. I was already in the city and this was at about 9, so I changed course, gave up my internship, and headed over to the address. This was in the earlier stages of meeting Devin and I wouldn’t say I was even part of the In The Lab team yet. To me, In The Lab, even though I wasn’t even part of the team yet, was way more important to me than an internship. Yes, internships are supposedly important throughout your college years, but we don’t all have to follow the same blueprint. When you want something, you’ll find a way to go after it.
This is applicable to so many different things in our lives. Our relationships, jobs, exploring new interests, working out, etc. All of these require time and we ultimately have the decision to use that time wisely and prioritize. Sometimes, you just have to say no to certain things if you have something that you want to accomplish. Prioritization is key, especially because time is the one asset that we can never get back. We can lose money and still get it back the next day. Once time has passed, it is gone. Choose wisely.
